Holika Dahan commemorates the legend of Bhakt Prahlad. His demon father, Hiranyakashipu, tried to kill him by making his aunt Holika sit in a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. Holika had a boon that made her immune to fire. However, due to Lord Vishnu's grace, Prahlad was saved unhurt, and the evil Holika was burned to ashes.

Kevat playfully refused to bring the boat because he had heard that the dust of Lord Rama's feet had turned a stone into a woman (Ahilya). He argued that if the dust touched his wooden boat and turned it into a woman, he would lose his only source of livelihood. He insisted on washing Lord Rama's feet first!
